Get rid of unwanted wrinkles of the face and get a youthful appearance with an injection
With age there is a slowdown in production of elastin and collagen fibers of the body. This compounded with overuse of the muscles, especially of the forehead, in between the eyebrows and the corners of the eyes and the mouth lead to formation of creases and lines. These are the signs of aging and make the face look less attractive. These lines can be improved without surgery and without scars by a simple injection of botulinum toxin (BOTOX).
Botox reduces the movement of muscles in the affected areas, the skin stops being creased and is allowed to recover, causing the lines to soften or even fade away. In the areas treated, the muscles are temporarily inactivated (always reversible). Depending on each individual and the dose used, the response to treatment can vary from a relaxation of the muscles to an inability to move the muscles. For the first couple of years, frequent treatments are required to `re-educate' the facial muscles. Thereafter, treatments would be less frequent until a yearly maintenance treatment is normally all that is required.
Anybody between the ages of 18-65 years, with the presence of wrinkles on expressing emotions on the forehead, around the eyes is a candidate. Pregnancy, allergies to Botox/botulinum toxin, neuromuscular disorders are contraindications.
Treatment time is 10 -15 minutes, a few small injections in the area relaxes the muscle. Since the treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the line at the injection site it has no effect on other elements of facial expression. It also has no effect on sensory nerves allowing for normal feeling.
The effects of Botox last 4 – 6 months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments the effects often begin to last longer. The maximal effect of Botox is seen from the 10th day, but may begin by day 3.
The most common use of Botox is the deep creases between the eyebrows, forehead wrinkles and crow's feet around the eyes. Botox can be used to lessen the lines around the upper lip and mouth frown. It is often used to treat "turkey neck" bands or "necklace lines". USFDA approves the use of Botox for forehead lines, crow’s feet and for increased axillary sweating.
Botox has been safely used by millions for over 2 decades. There are no known serious side effects with Botox therapy for facial wrinkles. In some cases there can be some temporary side effect such as bruising or pain in the injection site. A tiny needle is used to minimize discomfort. Eyebrow or eyelid droop maybe seen in 1-2% of patients receiving Botox. It usually lasts 2-4 weeks and is mild.
Botox is used for excessive sweating under the arms, palms, and feet. It is also used to treat TMJ problems and for relief of migraine or tension headaches. It is also used for muscle spasmodic disorders.
Botox in combination with fillers and laser resurfacing is an important component of facial rejuvenation.
Botox delivers dramatic results with no down time, and is simple, quick and minimally invasive. It restores a smooth, relaxed, rejuvenated look to the face by smoothening away frown lines, crow's feet, mouth and forehead wrinkles. The use of Botox early in the skin aging cycle can prevent wrinkles and maintain a youthful look.
