What is Chemical peeling?

Chemical peeling is used on the body to improve the appearance of the skin and is typically performed on the face, neck or hands. A chemical solution is applied to the skin that causes it to shed off. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin and temporarily more sensitive to the sun.

How are chemical peels performed?

At the time of treatment, the skin is thoroughly cleansed with an agent that removes excess oils, and the eyes and hair are protected. One or more chemical solutions - an alpha hydroxy acid, such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or lactic acid; trichloroacetic acid (TCA); or carbolic acid (phenol) - are used. These applications produce a controlled wound, enabling new, refreshed skin to appear. Most patients experience a warm to somewhat hot or stinging sensation which lasts from a few seconds to few minutes. Anesthesia, painkillers are usually not required.

What is expected after a peel?

Superficial peeling usually involves mild redness with slight exfoliation for 2-4 days which may occasionally last for 7 days, followed by scaling that ends within three to seven days. Medium-depth and deep peeling may result in redness and swelling and the presence of water blisters that may break, crust, turn brown, and peel off over a period of seven to 14 days. It is important to avoid overexposure to the sun after a chemical peel since the new skin is fragile and more susceptible to damage. You will be prescribed the proper follow-up care to reduce the tendency to develop abnormal skin color after peeling.

How do I care for my skin after the peel?

The Doctor may recommend some special creams to use after the peel. Moisturizers and sunscreen are essential. It is wise not to pick on any peeling skin/scabs. Salon procedures are best avoided for few weeks after the peel or as advised by your doctor.

What are the side effects of a peel?

Redness, color changes, crusting, allergic reactions, flaring of herpes, increased sensitivity to the sunlight are rarely seen. The Doctor will advise you further on this.
