Breast Augmentation

increase or restore the breast to a desirable size and shape, using implants or fat transfer in small breasts.

What is Breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breast for a number of reasons:

  • To enhance the body contour of a woman who, for personal reasons, feels her breast size is too small.
  • To correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy.
  • To balance a difference in breast size.
  • As a reconstructive technique following surgery for breast cancer.

By inserting an implant behind each breast, surgeons are able to increase a woman's bustline by one or more bra cup sizes

Types of implants

A breast implant is made of an outer layer of silicone, but may be filled with silicone gel or salt water. The manufacturer’s life expectancy of breast implants is 10 years, although implants last much longer.

The size and shape of the breast following breast augmentation surgery will adjust with time and is to some extent unpredictable. It is also not always possible to create a 'cleavage' with breast augmentation.

Planning your surgery

In your initial consultation, you will be evaluated for your general health status. A concomitant breast lift may also be recommended by your surgeon.

Where will the surgery be performed

It will be performed at Jaju Plastic Surgery Center. This center is well equipped to undertake any kind of major surgical and anaesthetic procedure and ensures the highest degree of safety. We have well trained staff to take care of you during your surgery and recovery.

What kind of anesthesia is used for the procedure?

General anesthesia is the preferred method of achieving adequate sedation and pain control.

The Surgery

Usually the surgery takes from one and a half to three hours. The incision can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest or around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), or in the armpit.

The breast tissue and skin is lifted to create a pocket, either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath your chest wall muscle (the pectoral muscle). The implants are then centered beneath your nipples. Drainage tubes may be used for a day following the surgery

Placement behind the muscle may be more painful for a few days after surgery than placement directly under the breast tissue.

Stitches are used to close the incisions, which may also be taped for greater support. A gauze bandage may be applied over your breasts to help with healing.

After your surgery

You're likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following your surgery, but you'll be up and around in 24 to 48 hours. The swelling in your breasts may take three to five weeks to disappear.

Getting back to normal

Your breasts will probably be sensitive to direct stimulation for two to three weeks, so you should avoid much physical contact.

Your scars will be firm and pink for at least six weeks. After several months, your scars will begin to fade, although they will never disappear completely.

Your new look

Your decision to have breast augmentation is a highly personal one that not everyone will understand. The important thing is how you feel about it. Regular examination and routine mammograms for those in the appropriate age groups at prescribed intervals will help assure that any complications, if they occur, can be detected early and treated.

Early complications :
  • Infection
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Altered sensations around the nipple and areola, usually reversible.
Late complications :
  • Capsular contracture, which may require removal of the implant.
  • Implant rupture due to injury or undue compression.

Wil I be able to feed after augemtation mammoplasty?

This procedure in no way interferes with the normal breast feeding and there is no evidence that any silicone is found in breast milk.

Does this procedure increase the risk of cancer?

There is an association between breast implants causing a very rare kind of lymphoma which is called BIA-ALCL. Very few cases have been reported in world literature about this and it is yet a matter of research and is treatable in early cases. Your doctor shall inform you more about this.

Does it interfere with cancer detection?

Mammography is possible after breast augmentation. But this needs to be done in centers which are trained to carry out and read these investigations. Some additional views of mammograms and in certain cases, ultrasound examination may be necessary.

Generally health insurance policies do not cover the cost of breast augmentation, but you should check your policy to be sure
